Youth Leadership Awards - Zone final

Three outstanding winners off to the European Parliament

Rotary Youth Leadership - Winners from Area Finals, Lodge Hotel 16-11-16

The club was asked to organise the Zone 2 finals which were held at the Lodge hotel. Big thanks to all involved.

Ruth Mullan, Christopher McKee & Rebecca Richardson from Coleraine, Limavady & Dungannon have been selected as winners of the area finals of Rotary Ireland Youth Leadership Competition.

During the last month 119 young people, 22 schools covering the Rotary clubs of  Coleraine, Ballymoney, Ballycastle, Limavady, Ballymoney Dungannon, Larne & Carrickfergus have been involved in a rigorous competition. 

The Youth Leadership Competition, aimed at pupils age 16-18 gives young people an opportunity to develop their leadership and networking skills.

Eight local winners, Ruth Mullan (Coleraine), Benedict Anslow (Ballymoney), Orla Donnelly (Ballycastle), Christopher McKee (Limavady), Kirsten Collins (Ballymena), Rebecca Richardson (Dungannon), Shelly Kilmurry (Larne), Grace Carson (Carrickfergus) were selected by their local Rotary Clubs for the area finals on Wednesday.  

Each were  interviewed on a variety of topics covering topical issues in Europe, Community and environmental issues, future of the European Union, leadership skills and Rotary.


Assistant District Governor Rotary Ireland, William Cross congratulated all 8 club winners on their success at reaching the finals. They are the leaders of the future. Each had benefited from the experience involved in the competition and were a credit to their parents, schools and  Rotary. Local judges from Ballymoney, Helen Robinson, Chris Henderson & Olive Harvey commended all eight on interview skills and quality of their answers to some very difficult topics.

Ruth, Christopher & Rebecca will join 21 winners from the island of Ireland in a weeks leadership training at the end of January 2017, including a trip to Strasbourg.
Luiseach Mathers from Ballycastle a winner from last year commented “The opportunity given to me by Rotary was one of the best and most memorable experiences in my life”

Ruth, Christopher & Rebecca will visit Stormont, Belfast, Dublin to meet local leaders and politicians.  They will then travel to Strasbourgh to join 400 other young people and debate a range of issues in the European Parliament.

The experience will help them forge new friends, face andovercome new challenges and learn about the Worlds number one voluntary organisation “Rotary”

The project is jointly funded by Rotary Ireland and Euroscala
